How and Why To Get An Australian Business Number (ABN)

What is an ABN?

An Australian Business Number (ABN) is a means for the government to identify you as a sole trader for various tax and other business purposes.

Why do I Require an ABN?

As per your Agreement, you are being hired as an independent contractor (Cl. 8). Legally, this means that you are responsible for the payment of all income tax, goods and services tax (GST) and superannuation, because you are working as a sole trader.

Please note that the personal income tax-free threshold is currently $18,200. This means that if you do not earn above $18,200 in the financial year, you will not be taxed by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).

Please also note that superannuation contributions are voluntary for sole traders, and we are not required to withhold superannuation on your behalf. You are only required to register for GST if your gross income exceeds $75,000 in the financial year.

How do I obtain an ABN?

You can apply for an ABN online without charge from the Australian Business Register.
