Chapter 7: The First Lesson + Lesson Reports โœ๏ธ

View chaptersBack to home

Your first lesson leaves a lasting imprint on your tutoring relationship.

Your First Lesson โœ๏ธ

The First Lesson Questionnaire (FLQ) has been created to support you in establishing a solid foundation with your student in your first lesson. The FCQ is accessible here and on your TutorCruncher Dashboard.ย

โ€By completing the FLQ you are guided through a series of questions to help you understand your studentโ€™s character, goals, and areas for improvement. You will also outline a simple lesson plan with your student which will cover the content of your lessons between now and their next key milestone - your studentโ€™s next exam or assignment for the subject you are tutoring them in. Building a lesson plan together establishes clear expectations of what will be covered each lesson and sets the foundation for consistent lessons leading up to the key milestone.ย

โ€The FLQ will take 10-20 minutes to complete and will guide you through the following sections:ย

  1. Introduce yourself + Set the agenda โœ๏ธ
  2. Your student's goals ๐ŸŽฏ
  3. The support your student is looking for ๐Ÿ™‹โ™€๏ธ
  4. Build a lesson plan๐Ÿ“
  5. Organise weekly lessons ๐Ÿ“…
  6. Our cancellation policy ๐Ÿค“
  7. Wrap up ๐Ÿค

โ€

What should you do after the FCQ?

For the rest of your first lesson, you can:

  • Work on your studentโ€™s upcoming assignment;
  • Start covering a topic they are struggling with;
  • Run through introductory material for a subject - e.g. covering the key modules of the subject at a high level;
  • Give your student a short introductory test to gauge their competence in a topic; or
  • A combination of these.ย

โ€Note that some students may be starting lessons right before an exam or assignment. In this case, be mindful of how much time you are spending on the FLQ and move onto what theyโ€™d like help with as soon as possible. You can also revisit some parts of the FLQ in subsequent lessons if needed, however weโ€™ve found that running these questions in the first lesson goes a long way to setting a strong foundation for long term support.

โ€During your Zoom training with Natalie, you will have the opportunity to practice the FLQ, gaining confidence in the process.ย ย

Lesson Reports ๐Ÿ“

You will complete a short lesson report after each lesson, which will cover 3 areas:

  • What you covered in your lesson today;
  • What you will be covering next lesson; and
  • The wins or progress your student has made.

Lesson Reports are easiest to complete right after the lesson. They should only take a few minutes to write and will greatly enhance the level of communication you have with parents and students.ย We have received excellent feedback from parents from our lesson reports - doing this well goes a long way to building trust and rapport with your parents and continuing to offer value to your students.ย  Writing Lesson Reports well translates to a higher SLTV.

See the PDF attached for 3 examples of clear and informative Lesson Reports.ย
